The mission of the Truman Literacy Consortium (TLC) is to provide job-embedded, ongoing professional development for teachers of all grade levels in the implementation of SBRI (Scientifically Based Reading Instruction).
In order to meet the unique needs for each district, TLC plans the use of purchased days on a district by district basis.
The elementary school plans could include: LETRS training, classroom observations with feedback to the teachers, DIBELS training, and workshops addressing the 90 Minute Block, Work Stations, Differentiated Instruction, Advanced DIBELS Analysis, and 3 Tier Instruction. The principals at these schools also have the opportunity to attend Spring and Fall literacy leader meetings.
The high school plans could include workshops on teaching reading in the content areas and/or workshops on teaching writing in the content areas. These are followed with conferences with teachers on how they are implementing the strategies in their classrooms. Principals in these buildings are offered assistance in the implementation of SBRI through individual conferences.
TLC began in the school year 2001-2002 with thirteen elementary schools purchasing days in the consortium and having one consultant available for services. This school year 2007-2008 TLC has expanded to include 15 elementary schools and 4 middle and high schools. The schools are now being served by two consultants.
Current school district members include: Adair County RI, Adair County RII, Bevier C-4, Clark County RI, Green City RI, Knox County RI, La Plata RII, Lewis County C-1, Monroe City RI, Putnam County RI, Revere C-3, Schuyler County RI, Scotland County RI, Shelby County RIV and Wyaconda CI.
